4 Must Try Foods in Auckland, New Zealand

I flew to Auckland, New Zealand for my exchange in 2018. And almost 2 years later, I can still spend hours (okay maybe not hours, but definitely a substantial period of time) talking about all the good food I ate in Auckland!

Hopefully you will have the pleasure of visiting Auckland for exchange, and have the chance to try the food that my friends and I enjoyed (and now miss) so much!

From breakfast to supper, there is always something delicious to treat your taste buds to! I have made a list specially for you, on all the amazing food you could eat in a day in Auckland!

Let me bring you through the food itinerary for the day:

  • Breakfast – Best Ugly Bagels

  • Lunch – Top Café dumpling house

  • Dinner – Night Markets

  • Supper – Giapo

1) Breakfast - Best Ugly Bagels

Peanut Butter and Jam Bagels!

This was recommended to me by a friend and here I am, recommending it to all of you! This was definitely one of the best bagels I have ever tasted! A really good ambience and they are super generous with the spreads 😊 I personally really enjoyed PB + J (those beautiful bagels in the picture above) and the cream cheese bagel! Perfect breakfast for a road trip as they are super filling and yummy, and above all, are packed nicely and ready to be consumed while in a car!

2) Lunch - Top Café dumpling house

Dumplingsss!

There is no shortage of Asian cuisines in Auckland, so you don’t have to worry about not being able to find Asian meals/food to satisfy your cravings! If you are a dumpling lover like me, I would suggest that you get some dumplings from Top Café Dumpling house. They are really generous with the fillings & there are also loads of flavors to try! My personal favorites are the pork and chive dumplings, and the pork and cabbage dumplings. Just thinking about them now makes me understand why I would walked 1 hour (there and back) just to get those dumplings! It’s pretty accessible, just that there wasn’t a direct bus from where I stayed. I obviously didn't mind the walk there just to get my hands on these delicious dumplings!

If you are wondering whether I walked there every single time just to satisfy my dumpling cravings, the answer is no! You can get their frozen dumplings and cook (pan fry or boil) them at any time and on any day your dumpling cravings demand to be satisfied.

3) Dinner - Night Markets

Noodles that I got at the night market!

Shopping centers close pretty early in Auckland as compared to Singapore and at the beginning of my exchange, I didn't really know what to do, or where to explore once the sun had set.

My friends and I chanced upon a night market at the heart of Auckland’s city center one fine night, and after visiting it, I was definitely sold! The food was tasty, there were loads of variety, and they were definitely affordable (my student wallet was thankful for that)! There were loads of Asian food offered there, so this is definitely another place where you can head to get your Asian food cravings satisfied!

There are several night markets spread throughout Auckland, though some are less convenient to get to (especially if you don’t drive). Fret not, there is still a bunch of them which are located near train stations, so you could opt to head to those if you don’t drive/don’t intend on renting a car!

4) Supper - Giapo

Giapo Buono - an Italian-inspired flavour

New Zealand is well known for their dairy products and ice-cream, so of course I can't miss out on some good dessert! Beyond my love for dumplings, I also really enjoy having a cup of ice-cream to end off a great day!

My go-to ice-cream shop would definitely have to be Giapo! They have really innovative and interesting flavors like the one above! It’s the Giapo Buono, and is made up of caramel, hazelnut praline and amaretti! I have tried several different flavors and I can’t decide which I love the most because they are all sooooo delicious! Would definitely recommend that you visit especially if you are a fan of ice-cream!😊
