Advice To Aspiring Student Leaders

With three years on the line, there's definitely a ton of activities to do as a polytechnic student. Individuals seeking the thrill of running events or a chance to lead a pack may find themselves applying for a committee.

However, greenhorns may not realize that the committee can be pretty daunting. Imagine managing intense workloads, deadlines and expectations while keeping your GPA afloat.

Nonetheless, these barriers have never deterred successful student leaders. As their journey comes to a close, a few student leaders have generously shared their stories and advice for aspiring leaders.

Advice #1: Learn to Delegate

"An event that I planned as a student leader will be the local adventure camp. This was a large scale camp for CCA members that required weeks and months of planning and there were many ups and downs before and during the actual event. An advice that I would give would be to allocate work properly amongst all members to ensure that different opinions can be considered and the highest quality of work or outcome can be produced." - Year 3 LSCT Society Leadership Training Coordinator Ian Poh

Advice #2: Never Back Down

"A piece of advice that I'll give to future student leaders is to never back down from a challenge as we can always learn how to overcome it. Whenever I got the opportunity to be apart of something big such as a committee member, I'll usually accept it first despite my nerves or any pressure that i may feel. In short, we should accept a task and learn how to do it later instead of hesitating and doubting your capabilities. This allowed me to expand my capabilities and has made me who I am today!" - Year 3 LSCT Society Honorary Secretary Rishi Ravi

Advice #3: Rely On Your Team

"The first event I planned as a student leader was a night cycling event. Planning such a large scale event for the first time was tough. There was a lot of liaising with vendors, lecturers, participants and even some parents. I had to rely heavily on my committee members during the entire process and we had to sacrifice a lot of time testing out different routes overnight. Eventually, the event turned out to be a great success and it wouldn’t have been possible without the joint effort of all the members in the committee. This taught me how important teamwork is as a student leader."- Year 3 LSCT Society Finance Advisor Janna Seah

Joining a committee may not be a smooth-sailing journey, but the experiences and relationships fostered will be unrivalled. If you have the heart for it, step up when the opportunity presents itself. This leadership journey will definitely be a surefire way to cultivate your talents as a leader, and character as an individual.
