Your memory is probably is your greatest weapon when it comes to examinations. Take the number of topics that you have to remember and multiply that with the number of exams that you’re sitting for, and things can get abit overwhelming. Not forgetting the amount of pressure and nerves that you’re going through, our memory might just fail us when it matters.
Here are some tips that will help you with your memory when preparing for your examinations:
1) Spread out your study sessions
Spreading out your study sessions over a multiple short sessions as compared to one long session gives you the time you need to process and internalise information. Stretching your memory during an extended and long session might invoke fatigue and confusion to your mind, so give yourself ample time to really understand your content.
2) Pay Full Attention
While studying, devote your full attention to what you’re studying. Often times when we’re studying, we are distracted by many things; our phones, our computer, the music we play in the background. Putting aside all these distractions will help you convert information from your short-term memory to your long-term memory, allowing yourself to recall information much easier during your examinations!
3) Relate new information to familiar information
Learning new information can be very difficult, due to the unfamiliar nature of it all. You will have a harder time recalling something that is very foreign to you as compared to something that is very familiar to you. If you can find a connection between the new and the old, you’ll find that you’ll have an easier time remembering your study material.
4) Make use of Mnemonic Devices
Mnemonic devices are a technique used to assist in recall. For example, associating a complicated problem with an object that you are very familiar with. Find your own unique way of connecting the two like coming up with a song, rhyme or joke will help you remember these complicated problems and its solutions faster during an examination.
5) Sleep
This one is very important, especially if you’re doing some last minute cramming. Sleeping after learning something new actually leads to physical changes in the brain. So ensuring that you get ample sleep after each study session is crucial in doing well in your examinations. Take naps after learning something new can also be very beneficial in remembering content better!
Press on for your study sessions everyone! Just a while more and it will all be over!
