Health Tips and Tricks for an Overseas Student

Beach day with other Singaporeans studying in the Republic of Ireland.

Hello! My name is Natalie and I’m a Singaporean pursuing Dentistry in the Republic of Ireland, Cork. I enjoy discovering tips and tricks related to fitness and dieting, and here are some methods that I’ve used to keep healthy while living overseas.

Fitness Tips and Tricks:

1. You don’t need a gym membership.

Instead of spending money on a gym membership, purchase an anti-slip gym mat (which doesn’t cost much and serves as a long-term investment) and follow one of the many free online workouts on YouTube and Instagram. In fact, I often get inspired by such accounts to push myself in my workouts. If you need weights, simply buy resistance bands to use at home. You could also pick up sports in your university such as dancing and rock climbing!

2. Plan and create workout routines.

“You will never always be motivated; you just have to be disciplined”

It’s a given that you will have many commitments to juggle while in school - studying, friends, groceries, laundry, etc. However, if you’re determined, you only need to dedicate 30 minutes each day into your fitness routine. You don’t need lots of time for an effective workout! Push yourself to do a HIIT or go for a run!

3. Drinking water

It is important to ensure you are getting your recommended water intake. Drinking fluids also help keep you full and prevent you from snacking. I personally love drinking tea.

4. When cooking your own meals...

Refrain from adding too much extra salt and sugar to your food and have a list of healthy recipes which you can rotate between. There's a plethora of recipes you may find online, and I often find myself getting inspiration from Instagram accounts or even Facebook groups. Separate your sauces to prevent over-adding. To save time, I love bringing back many types of pastes from home and using them in moderation.

Here are some of the meals which I've managed to prepare and cook!

At the end of the day, don’t expect drastic changes within a short time frame. It takes a lot of time, patience and determination to stay focused on your goals. Enjoy the process and remember that exercising and diet would come hand in hand in with leading a healthier lifestyle!

After completing her A Levels at Raffles Junior College, Natalie wasn’t sure about what she really wanted to do in university. In fact, she never even imagined that she would be leaving Singapore! However, she took a leap of faith and is currently having a whale of a time pursuing Dentistry in the Republic of Ireland. Even when it gets stressful in dental school, Natalie strongly believes in self-love and devoting time to the things she loves - fitness, badminton and cooking. In fact, she’s even started a food blog on Instagram @natfatdiaires!
