The Dark Truth Behind Every Successful Stage Production

Funnily enough, working in shadows is how we shine as members of the EMCC crew. EMCC, also known as the ExxonMobil Campus Concerts, is currently the longest-running University Arts Outreach Programme that specialises in Stage Productions in Singapore.

It is never always smooth sailing in EMCC! We face various challenges along the way that need to be dealt with swiftly in order for the shows to go on!

In this post, we will delve further into them and give you an insider view of what goes on behind the scenes here at EMCC, while most of us are busy enjoying the show on the front rows.

Extremely Hectic Schedules.

Given that Production has a people-centric nature, it may be difficult and complex to schedule a common timing for both the performers and the crew. Typically, the crew would work around their own schedules to accommodate the performer’s schedule, given that the performer is the most important asset for any show.

In EMCC, while we have a large group of members, there is limited manpower we can work with as some members have other commitments outside of EMCC. It is difficult to mitigate this issue and in the worst case scenario, the crew available might have to take up dual roles. For example, the Production Manager (PM) can double up as a Stage Manager (SM). However, this is not recommended since it would be too stressful for the crew member.

Communication is Key.

Additionally, information about event shows is typically shared on group chat platforms like Telegram and WhatsApp. However, there could be miscommunication between the stage manager and publicity crew (late postings) or last minute changes to the number of crew needed on the performance day itself. Hence, it is hard to take necessary measures quickly if there is no back-up plan or if there is only one personnel in-charge (and they happen to be busy throughout the day).

This creates confusion among the crew and the client when executing the production process. To mitigate this issue, typically the Production Manager would be the one responsible for informing the crew regarding any recent updates or changes to the production flow in the group chat.

Endless logistical limitations.

In our experience working with clients, it is essential for the production side and the performance side to work collectively together. While the creative elements are limitless, the technical elements are quite the opposite of it. While the production crew should listen to the creative team (could be crew members doing lighting design, for example) for their input, they have to understand the physical limitations in any show, in terms of budget and resources available. If both factors are not considered, there will be a breakdown and the show cannot continue.

There could also be last minute changes or hiccups that occur before the actual show or even during the show itself. We overcome this mostly with quick and flexible thinking to turn the situation around.

Here are some words from our AY20/21 EMCC President (Yun Jing):

"I remember when we were doing Arts Out Loud! Event back in AY18/19, it was hosted at University Town (UTown) Education Resource Centre (ERC) and we needed a space for the dancers to change in between segments. We did not take this into account because it was communicated to us at the last minute, so we had to figure out how to set up a temporary changing room in an open space. In the end, we had our crew to hold up a black cloth as a form of coverage – a very manual and super makeshift changing room!”

Family is everything we needed to keep us going.

Despite the countless struggles our EMCC crew face each semester, it was well worth the pain, as we always have each other’s backs! Our seniors would chip in extra time to conduct workshops to teach the juniors, and they would always go the extra mile to help out on season shows too!

Our juniors are always active and eager to take up different roles to experience different aspects of a stage production, and for that, we are always thankful to them!

This wraps up the action that goes on behind the scenes at EMCC. With so much going on, there is never a dull moment here, hence this is what makes our CCA unique and interesting!
